The Mask of the Black Sun – A Free Call of Cthulhu RPG Module

“This is it – the case that will turn our fortunes around!” cries Mike Taggart, as he hands you an Adair Company telegram that smells faintly of a woman’s perfume and contains an offer too good to refuse.

It’s no secret that the Taggart Agency, Salem Falls’ once prestigious detective agency has fallen on hard times. First, there was Mike’s longtime partner Solomon Drake calling it quits and starting his rival agency, and then Mike turned to the bottle, and, well, you know how the rest of it goes. Since then, the agency’s been on a slow, downward slide into obscurity, but Mike just received a promising telegram that has a solid case written all over it.

Elizabeth Parlee, one of the richest folks in town, wants someone to retrieve a mysterious relic – the titular Mask of the Black Sun – that was recently stolen. She claims it’s a priceless heirloom that reminds her of her recently departed and world-traveled husband, but rumours are that the mask was once used in rituals as strange as they were dangerous.

Who could have stolen the mask, and for what purpose? And why was this telegram addressed to Mike’s old partner Solomon anyways?

It’s finally here!

Our first game module for Call of Cthulhu RPG (the tabletop pen and paper one, not the PC game nor the board game – there’s a couple…) is now available in the Miskatonic Repository over at Drive Thru RPG.

The Mask of the Black Sun is a short, one-off scenario for new and experienced players. It’s set within the fictional Canadian city of Salem Falls and revolves around the mysterious requests that arrive at the Taggart Agency, a once illustrious private investigation firm now on hard times.

It’s a relatively brief game module (the book is only 12 pages – not too intimidating). As such, it should take roughly a single game session of 2-4 hours to get through.

The module came out of some game sessions we had during the COVID Pandemic and was based off an earlier unpublished short story of mine (that had some of the same characters and locations in it). We wrote it, play tested it, and edited to be ready for release over a year ago and finally found the free time to put it all together.

There’s a creepy buildup, a horrifying climax, and an unsettling conclusion, all waiting to be experienced.

As mentioned above, you can pick up your copy of the game module under the pay what you will structure of anything from “free” to “whatever you want.”

If any of you have questions or comments, we’d love to hear them! Also, if for some reason you’re having a hard time getting it from Drive Thru RPG for free – shoot us a quick message in the comments below and we’ll find some way of getting it over to ya.
